Enchanting world of Stephen Jones, chapeaux d’artiste has opened at the Palais Galliera, where the artistry of British milliner Stephen Jones takes center stage.
Curated by Miren Arzalluz, with insights from Marie-Laure Gutton and Alice Freudiger, this exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the craft.
Renowned by socialites and fashion designers alike since the 80s, this exhibition is a celebration of hats as high art – a 1st for the Palais in over 40 years.
This landmark event invites visitors to delve into Jones’s creative journey, exploring the inspirations that fuel his designs and the profound influence of Paris on his work.
With nearly 400 pieces on display, including over 170 stunning hats, the exhibition also showcases Jones’s archives: preparatory sketches, captivating photographs, and highlights from fashion shows.
Born in 1957 in north-west England, Jones honed his craft at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London. He opened his first millinery salon in 1980, quickly making a name for himself with two annual collections that turned heads and set trends. His early days were spent at the iconic Covent Garden nightclub The Blitz, a vibrant epicenter of the New Romantic movement, where he mingled with music legends like Spandau Ballet and Boy George among his first clients.
As he transitioned into haute couture, Jones forged lasting partnerships with fashion powerhouses, including Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Vivienne Westwood.
The exhibition features around 40 complete outfits, highlighting the seamless synergy between his hats and garments, particularly his enduring collaboration with Christian Dior, which spans nearly 3 decades.
Stephen Jones occupies a distinctive place in the fashion landscape, having shaped iconic collections that redefine silhouettes and elevate the art of millinery.
For an interactive twist, visitors can enjoy an AI photobooth, allowing them to virtually try on hats and take home a chic souvenir.
Stephen Jones, chapeaux d’artiste runs until 16 March 2025 – a must see for anyone captivated by the intersection of fashion and art.
